Community Spotlight: Rebecca, Cohort 7

Just last week we said congratulations to our 6th cohort of software engineers who graduated from our Technology Academy, and now we’re about to welcome Cohort 7.

Our new cohort will see us welcome 26 new members to the Technology Academy community, and this week we're shining a spotlight on Rebecca.

We had the pleasure of sitting down with Rebecca for 5 minutes to chat about what inspired her to pursue a career in tech, what she’s looking forward to most about Bright Network Technology Academy and where she has her sights set once she’s completed her 12 weeks of training.

Here’s what she has to say:

What did you study at university?

I studied Economics as it’s something I always had an interest in and graduated in 2021. I studied it at A Level as well, and knew that if you have an Economics degree that it gives you lots of career options when you graduate.

And what did you do after graduating?

To be honest, I didn’t have much of an idea what I wanted to do. After a few months I did an internship abroad in digital marketing at a tech start-up, where I was working with front end developers and data scientists. Sometimes I would look in on what they were doing and it really intrigued me.

Was this where you had your ‘click’ moment that made you want to work in tech?

Yeah, literally. In marketing it’s helpful to know HTML basics, so I started teaching myself. Then I continued and couldn’t stop. I did CSS and was like ‘oh my god I actually enjoy doing all of this, now I want to switch’.

How did you find out about Technology Academy?

Well, just after I taught myself HTML and CSS I received an email from Bright Network saying I would be an ideal fit for the programme, so I applied. The interview process was a bit daunting at first, but it was really smooth and I enjoyed it once I got started.

Well congratulations again on getting onto bootcamp. Is there anything you’re looking forward to most about the 12-week course?

When I was studying my final year was in lockdown. It was good at first, and I thought things might be a bit easier but in the end it was just a bit weird, you know? I think it was because we couldn’t really connect with people as much. There’s the whole thing of people not putting their cameras on, so you don’t even know who you're studying with. So, I’m really looking forward to the community, the projects and the group work.

And finally, is there anything you’re hoping for after Technology Academy?

I would really like to get placed with one of the Technology Academy partners, but the main thing for me is just getting my foot into the tech scene.

A huge thank you for Rebecca for taking the time to speak with us about her journey so far, what made her realise tech was the career path she wanted to follow, and why she’s looking forward to Technology Academy.

Good luck, and welcome to the Bright Network community!
